Conversational Spanish Classes Syllabus

Week One – Speaking a foreign language begins with the proper pronunciation. In the first lesson we start with the pronunciation of the vowels. Your language skills will continue with the basics for polite conversation. The instructional content of this lesson also includes learning the expressions of courtesy. Reaching general competence is also aided through the introduction of vocabulary designed to add to your knowledge and your ability to communicate. The practical application of what is taught in this lesson is through practice activities and conversation that reflect real-life situations.

Week Two – Learning a language is much like building a home. In the previous lesson we began laying the foundation, in this lesson we continue to build. The subject matter that is introduced in this lesson is designed to familiarize you with the use of numbers. Achieving competency with numbers is beneficial in a variety of situations from telling time to purchasing goods. In each lesson the application of your second language skills is through activities and conversations that integrate the subject matter of every lesson.

Week Three – It is impossible to communicate effectively without verbs. As we continue to build toward competency we introduce the most useful verbs in the Spanish language. You will become familiar with how to put these verbs to use in common real-life situations, thus increasing your level of comfort in communicating in Spanish. Situational use of these verbs is often common in the incorporation of idiomatic expressions that will increase your ability to communicate. The practice activities and conversations will help you translate this knowledge into effective communication.

Week Four – In the fourth lesson we strengthen the foundation of your second language with a review of the material introduced in lesson three. We also continue to move forward by integrating knowledge of the calendar as it relates to daily activities. You will find this lesson highly beneficial as you navigate through daily situations that involve personal or business appointments, or activities at a bus or train station or airport. Again, the goal of competency is advanced with the introduction of additional vocabulary. Real life situational application is achieved through practice activities and conversations.

Week Five – The final lesson strengthens your ability to communicate in Spanish by focusing on life’s practical skills such as the ability to ask for and understand directions. Phone skills are also introduced. We will also stress competency through vocabulary. Per each lesson we continue to use our language in situational settings with conversations and practice activities. Your questions at each lesson are always welcome, in fact they are encouraged. A portion of the final lesson is specifically designed for the purpose of providing the answers to your specific questions about the language.
